Naval Air Station Buckley was located near Aurora, Colorado and operated by the United States Navy.
In 1954, the USAF C-97 Stratofreighter, Vixen 03 was ordered to the air field by Admiral Walter Bass for a top secret mission for Hickam AFB, Hawai'i. The Vixen 03 crashed soon after take off. The runway was eleven thousand feet long. [1]
